As the window polarized to obscure their view, Seez and

Soaz burst into hysterical laughter. Although not compulsive

voyeurs, Seez and Soaz had the healthy interest in gratuitous

nudity shared by all right-minded individuals, and were not

averse to attractive ladies with an exhibitionist bent putting

on a show for them as they did their rounds.

They still had to wipe Benny‘s window. They swung

on their support ropes, secure in the knowledge that they

wouldn‘t fall. Ropes and levers were the only way of working

one‘s way around the outside of The Hotel, and were

therefore the only way to do window cleaning duties. Seez

and Soaz were virtually the only people sufficiently resistant

to vertigo to do the job.

‗So that‘s what the Mullet Man‘s piece looks like with her

kit off,‘ said Soaz, when he finally stopped laughing. ‗Don‘t

think much of that. There‘s two types of women, Seez: those

that look good in clothes, and those that look good out of

them. Very few women are both.‘

What a cliched load of old bollocks, thought Seez. But he

let the comment go without questioning where his friend had

suddenly picked up all this half-baked sexual politics. Seez

liked nothing more than maintaining a quiet life.

‗Your skinny types,‘ Soaz continued, ‗those favoured by

the fashion industry, are - by definition - your clothes

horses. Straight up and down, so that they don‘t mess up the

lines of the designer‘s gear. Always a disappointment au

naturel.‘

‗Ah,‘ Seez replied philosophically. ‗But it could have been

worse. There is of course the third type: those who are

pig-ugly either way. Bear in mind that we could have got a

flash of one of the oldsters applying the talcum.‘

‗Urgh,‘ said Soaz, grimacing. Then he perked up a little.

‗You know who we need to tell about this choice viewing?‘

‗Not Jason?‘ asked Seez, aghast.

Soaz tutted. ‗Of course not Jason. He would be less than

pleased, and would definitely refrain from compensating us

for yesterday‘s debacle. No, we need to tell young Mr

Makhno.‘

Seez cast his mind back to the previous night. Makhno had

been in an even more sullen mood than they had, and

proceeded to regale them with a rant on the wonders of

Bernice Summerfield: the depth of her academic genius, the

brilliance of her smile, the sharpness of her wit, so on ad

nauseam. Seez and Soaz had slowly become bored rigid, then

abandoned Makhno to his stupor.

‗Makhno,‘ Seez decided, ‗will be well pissed off that we

saw the object of his desire in a state of undress.‘

‗Yeah,‘ said Soaz, grinning evilly. ‗Funny, isn‘t it?‘

Jason Kane objected to the slow, torturous process of waking

up. He especially disliked waking up alone, and spent much

of his time trying to stop this disastrous set of circumstances

from occurring.

As he stirred back into a state of consciousness, Jason felt

a sensation akin to being underwater, like bobbing on the

surface of a dead sea. He rolled around unimpeded in the

centre of his vast bed, with not a single soul to cling on to or

bump into. Layers of silk sheets and folds of soft duvet

wrapped themselves around him as he slowly surfaced from

sleep.

Lurking in the shadows of a darkened bedroom on one‘s

own felt like a sordid experience to Jason, far worse than the

rosy glow of waking among warm, friendly bodies.
